Safety Perceptions Grid Map

Legend:

Data from students' paper maps were digitized and summarized. Cells were then assigned a safety rating based on how many groups indicated safe or unsafe on their maps.

For example, a rating of -1 (Unsafe) was applied to cells with the following summaries in the format of "(sum of safe groups, sum of unsafe groups)":
(0,1); (1,2); (2,3); (3,4); (4,5)

Ratings ranged from -7 to +14 in the day time.
Ratings ranged from -10 to +8 in the night time.

The blue color ramp indicates safe areas.
The red color ramp indicates unsafe areas.
The light yellow indicates areas that were percieved as safe and unsafe by equal numbers of groups.

About the map:
Cell size: 1/8 mi square
Cells containing data: 937
Total cells: 1,951

Student Data, Notes, and Statistics:
Student Maps: 18
Records: 2,959

Not all groups provided information for each cell. Darker shades are used to indicate areas that were percieved as more decidedly safe or unsafe, from the summaries of student data. Some of the more frequently marked cells are those containing Kennedy Plaza, Feinstein High School, Providence Place Mall, Chad Brown, Manton Heights, Hartford Park, Roger Williams Park, Cranston St, and Southside.

Groups provided data for between 34 and 356 cells, with an average of 164 and standard deviation of 85. Check out the frequency distribution.

Groups were separated by sex. There were 13 female groups and 5 male groups. Females accounted for 1917 cells and males accounted for 1042 cells. Female groups provided data for between 34 and 303 cells, with an average of 147 and standard deviation of 79. Male groups provided data for between 108 and 356 cells, with an average of 208 and standard deviation of 103.
